Catalytic reformers are uniquely-designed fired heaters which contain complex coil systems. The primary function of a catalytic reformer is to elevate octane levels within gasoline products during the refinery process. Some catalytic reformer designs contain “U”-shaped coils (Arbor design) which are connected together by common headers to create one continuous coil system. This complex tube network array further complicates the overall configuration.
During normal operation, it is quite common for scale build-up to occur on the exterior surface of the individual “U”-shaped coil sections. The convoluted coil configuration, compounded with external scale build-up, creates a significant challenge when attempting to apply conventional NDT methods. Quest TruTec has devised technologies and procedures which enable coil inspections to be carried out for each of the individual coils via the common headers or from the exterior.
